MICHAEL MAZE NEW NATIONAL COACH OF THE SWEDISH MEN'S NATIONAL TABLE TENNIS TEAM
Following Marcus Sjöberg’s move into a new role a few weeks ago, the Swedish Table Tennis Association can now announce former Danish European champion Michael Maze as his successor.
A few weeks ago, it was confirmed that men’s national team coach Marcus Sjöberg would continue in a new role within the Swedish Table Tennis Association. The recruitment process for a new national coach has been intensive, and it has now been confirmed that former Danish table tennis star Michael Maze will take over the role.
“We have previously been in dialogue with Michael Maze about the position, as we identified him early on as a very interesting candidate. Our ambition has been to find someone with international experience who can relate to many of the challenges and experiences that both our current and future stars face,” says Head of National Teams Emma Persson.
Michael will take up his new role in October, working alongside the current national coach before officially taking over first of November.
“The coming period will be an intensive one for Michael, with several important events in the calendar. One of his key tasks will naturally be to get to know the players even better and gain an understanding of the conditions within their respective training environments, while also establishing a dialogue with the coaches who work with them on a daily basis. We currently have an exceptionally strong squad, so our focus is to create the best possible conditions for the players to continue developing and performing at the highest international level,” says Emma Persson.
Michael Maze has an impressive CV as a player, with numerous international medals, including a gold medal in the European Championship in both singles and team, a World Championship bronze medal in singles and an Olympic bronze medal in doubles.
“I am incredibly proud and excited to become the new national coach of the Swedish men’s national team. It is a great honour to have the opportunity to work with some of the best players in the world and, at the same time, become part of Sweden’s strong table tennis culture. I am really looking forward to taking on the role and, together with the players, achieving further major successes for Sweden,” says Michael Maze.
